Measure at chick level in the warm area. Provide a cooler escape zone, secure heat sources against fire and burns, and adjust based on behavior.
These temperatures are general starting points, not veterinary advice. Breed, feathering, ambient temperature, drafts, humidity, health and brooder design can change what chicks need.
Watch the chicks, not only the thermometer.
Chicks may crowd tightly near the heat source and chirp persistently. Check the temperature, drafts and heat availability.
Chicks are generally active and spread naturally between warmer and cooler areas, eating, drinking and resting normally.
Chicks may move far from the heat, pant or hold wings away from the body. Make sure they can escape the heated zone.
