These are general planning estimates, not universal legal or welfare minimums. Nest-area counts assume approximately one area per four laying females; actual duck nesting needs vary. Check local rules and expand the space when birds remain confined for long periods, the site is wet, ventilation is limited, breeds are unusually large, or flock behavior shows crowding.

How much coop space does one standard chicken need?
A useful starting point is 4 sq ft indoors and 10 sq ft outdoors per bird. Consider more when chickens spend much of the day confined.
How much shelter space does one standard duck need?
Start around 5 sq ft indoors and 15 sq ft outdoors per duck, then increase for wet conditions, large breeds or long confinement.
Do ducks need chicken-style nest boxes?
Usually not. Ducks generally prefer roomy, dry, ground-level nesting areas rather than raised boxes.
Is this calculation a legal minimum?
No. It is a planning estimate. Local rules and animal-welfare requirements can differ, and your birds may need more space.
