Egg Hatch Date Calculator for Chickens & Poultry
Use this free hatch date calculator to find the expected hatch date, lockdown date and todayβs incubation progress for chicken, duck, quail, turkey, goose or Muscovy eggs.
Your incubation timeline
Begin incubation in a prepared, stable incubator.
Candling can help you observe development. Keep handling gentle and checks brief.
Routine turning generally stops as hatch approaches.
The calculated date is a planning estimate, not a guarantee.
Incubation dates are planning estimates. Actual hatch timing varies with species, egg condition, storage, incubator type, temperature, humidity and other conditions. Follow the instructions for your incubator and appropriate poultry-care guidance.
Egg hatch dates by species
A hatch date is the estimated calendar date when an incubated egg should hatch. Select the bird and the date the eggs entered the incubator above; the calculator adds the speciesβ typical incubation period and identifies the common stop-turning or βlockdownβ date. The table below is a quick reference for the poultry included in this tool.
| Species | Typical incubation | Do not turn after | Expected hatch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken / bantam | 21 days | Day 18 | Around Day 21 |
| Duck | 28 days | Day 25 | Around Day 28 |
| Turkey | 28 days | Day 25 | Around Day 28 |
| Coturnix quail | 17 days | Day 15 | Around Day 17 |
| Bobwhite quail | 23β24 days | Day 20 | Around Days 23β24 |
| Goose | 28β34 days | Day 25 | Around Days 28β34 |
| Muscovy duck | 35β37 days | Day 31 | Around Days 35β37 |
How to calculate a hatch date
For calendar planning, treat the date the eggs are placed in the incubator as Day 0. The next calendar day is Day 1. Chicken eggs commonly need 21 days, so eggs set on April 1 have an estimated hatch date of April 22. The common stop-turning point is Day 18, which would be April 19 in that example.
The calculator handles the date counting automatically and shows a range for species with a wider typical incubation period. It also reports whether the setting date is still ahead, which incubation day you are on, or whether the expected hatch window has passed. You can copy the plan, print it or add the key dates to your calendar.
Chicken egg hatch date: the quick answer
Chicken and bantam eggs usually hatch around 21 days after they are set. Routine turning commonly stops after Day 18 as the eggs enter the final three days before the expected hatch. A calendar is useful for planning, but it cannot show whether an individual embryo is developing normally. Use the calculated date together with careful observation, appropriate candling and the instructions for your incubator.
Why the actual hatch date can move
The result is an estimate, not a deadline. The bird species and breed, how long eggs were stored before setting, egg condition, incubator type, and the stability of temperature, humidity and ventilation can all affect timing. Consistently warm conditions can lead to earlier hatches, while cooler conditions can delay them. Avoid changing incubator settings just to force the eggs to match a calendar date.
What to prepare before hatch day
- Confirm the stop-turning date. Routine turning generally ends during the final days so embryos can move into hatching position.
- Follow your incubator instructions. Settings and procedures vary by machine and species; keep vents clear and avoid unnecessary opening during active hatch.
- Prepare the brooder early. Set up safe heat, clean water, starter feed and non-slip bedding before chicks are expected.
- Save the dates. Use the calendar button above so lockdown and the expected hatch window are easy to find.
Hatch date FAQ
What is a hatch date?
It is the estimated calendar date when an incubated egg should hatch, based on the setting date and the typical incubation period for that species.
How do I calculate a chicken egg hatch date?
Treat the date the eggs enter the incubator as Day 0 and add 21 days. Chicken eggs commonly hatch around Day 21.
Is the setting date Day 0 or Day 1?
For this calculator, the date eggs are set is Day 0. The following calendar date is Day 1.
Can eggs hatch early or late?
Yes. Species, breed, egg storage and incubation conditions can shift the actual timing before or after the estimate.
When should I stop turning chicken eggs?
Chicken eggs are commonly no longer turned after Day 18, about three days before the expected Day 21 hatch.
Is the calculated date guaranteed?
No. It is a practical planning estimate. Watch the eggs and follow breed-specific and incubator-manufacturer guidance.
Use the date β and watch the eggs.
Some species have wider normal incubation ranges, so the calculator shows a window instead of inventing one exact day.
The tool shows the commonly recommended day to stop routine turning for the selected bird.
Have heat, water, starter feed and safe bedding ready before the expected hatch period begins.
